The City of Albany is located 409 kilometres from Perth, on the southern coast of Western Australia. A regional centre, Albany is a thriving multicultural city with many attractions. Albany has a dramatic granite coastline and is surrounded by magnificent scenery and pristine white beaches. With some of the most spectacular coastline and sheltered waterways in the world, the area is ideal for a coastal holiday.

Albany is known for its natural attractions including those that are situated along the rugged coastline of the Torndirrup National Park. The two major highlights are the Gap with a 24-metre drop to the water and the Natural Bridge, a granite formation in the shape of a bridge.

From budget accommodation to five star resorts, the area caters for many different holiday adventures which include fishing, canoeing, boat cruises, whale watching, wildflower viewing, coach and off-road tours, scuba diving, sailing and hiking.

Whale Watching: During the months of July through to October, Southern Right and Humpback Whales arrive in King George Sound to frolic and play. Whale watching has become a major pastime in Albany since the whaling industry ceased in 1978. Whales can be viewed from the shore or visitors can get closer by taking one of the whale watching cruises available daily during the season.

Western Australia added to its reputation as one of the World's premier year-round dive destinations when the decommissioned HMAS Perth was scuttled in the pristine waters of King George Sound in Albany in late November 2001.

The sinking of the former HMAS Perth follows the highly successful scuttling in 1998 of the former HMAS Swan, which has attracted over 20,000 divers to Dunsborough in the State's South-West. Combining the former Perth and Swan dive sites with the world's largest dive wreck, Sanko Harvest in Esperance, creates a perfect wreck trail across Western Australia.

HMAS Perth
The former Perth is a 133-metre long guided missile destroyer with a distinguished service record. She came under fire on four occasions during the Vietnam War and remnants of shellfire will be visible to divers on the interpretive dive trail. The HMAS Perth was scuttled on the 24th November 2001 as a dive wreck. This dive site is just awesome for novice to “technical” divers. A visually impacting dive with much of the ships equipment and machinery left in place. The growth has surprised everyone. Sponges, mussels, oysters, scallops, cuttlefish, large kingfish, and a plethora of local fish abound.

Upon leaving the surface, the first structure that is seen is a large horizontal platform at 5M and again at 10M perfect for a safety stops and deco stops while surrounded by fish and marine life. From dive to dive you may be visited by an Australian Sea Lion who shows great interest in what the divers are doing. HMAS Perth is a “must dive” spot when you visit Albany. Permits are required to dive this site. They are available from the Albany Visitors Centre, City of Albany or Local dive shops.
