From the island of Tongatapu and the capital of Nuku'Alofa, a scenic flight Vava’u takes just over one hour. This is a great place to enjoy world-class diving, whale watching, fishing, secluded beaches, translucent water and peaceful surrounds.
The Vava'u Archipelago is the the northernmost group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga at latitude 18.5' South.
There are many reasons to visit this lovely Island of Tonga. Long expanses of golden beaches, crystal clear waters, dramatic coastal scenery and volcanic peaks, a warm lifestyle that makes the other pacific islands look hectic in comparison to the warm and welcoming nature of the Tongan people.
Vava’u offers the opportunity for you to get up close and swim with the amazing Humpback Whales. They travel to Tonga to begin the breading process which starts early June, and they stay in the warm waters until they start heading on their way home at the beginning of November.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Vava'u |
Snorkelling with the whales:
There are only 2 places in the world which will allow you to swim with the Humpback whales, Tonga being one of these places. Slip into the water right next to these giants of the ocean and feel their songs vibrate through you. From late July through to November these incredible mammals can often be sighted travelling with their young through the Islands of Vavau, some are even sighted off the Coast of Eua Island. The Humpbacks migrate from the southern oceans of Antarctica where they feed, through to the Northern Islands off Tonga each year to mate and give birth.
On a typical day out, you will have the opportunity to watch the whale’s spectacular displays from the comfort of your whale watching boat. Watch as the Whales breach from the depths and display their large Flukes.
Scuba Diving:
Tonga has a lot to offer with it’s beautiful coral reefs stretching over fifty different dive spots, with many more sights still undiscovered. The visibility is between 25 metres to 40 metres and the water temperature is between 24° C to 28° C. The dive sites are varied throughout Tonga, offering soft corals, the crinoids, the underwater caves, wall diving, overhangs, gorgonian fans and diverse fish life and the unbelievably blue waters all add up to a diving destination that is second to none.
